Heavy metal contents in soils and native flora inventory at mining environmental liabilities in the Peruvian Andes

Inadequate waste management in Mining Environmental Liabilities (MEL) represents a risk for the environment and human health generates social problems. The aim of this article is twofold: i) to evaluate environmental quality soils from geo-ecological perspective; ii) inventory native flora around two MEL Hualgayoc district Peruvian Andes. Soil samples collected topsoil (upper 30 cm; i.e., soil arable layer) subsoil (30–60 cm) were classified as Gleyic Cambisols showed extremely acid pH (3.50–4.19 site #1 2.74–4.02 #2). mineralogical composition dominated by illite, kaolinite, quartz, jarosite. concentrations six potentially toxic elements (Pb, Zn, As, Cu, Ag, Cd) determined. High Pb (4683 mg kg?1), Zn (724.2 Cu (511.6 Ag (33.4 As (3611 kg?1) exceeded maximum permissible limits agricultural according Canadian regulations. Applied geochemical indexes some polluted therefore studied represent very high ecological risk. Twenty-two species belonging 12 family inventoried such contaminated sites thus having potential be used phytoremediation purposes.
